The radio halo in the merging cluster A 3562

چکیده
We present new VLA observations at 1.4 GHz confirming the presence of a radio halo at the centre of the cluster A3562, in the core of the Shapley Concentration. We also report a detailed multifrequency radio study of the head tail galaxy J1333–3141, which is completely embedded in the halo emission. The radio halo has an irregular shape, and a largest linear size of ∼ 620 kpc, which is among the smallest found in the literature. The source has a steep spectrum, i.e. α1.4 GHz 843 MHz ∼ 2, and its total radio power, P1.4 GHz ∼ 2 × 1023 W Hz−1, is the lowest known to date. The radio power of the halo and the X–ray parameters of the cluster, such as LX and kT, nicely fit the correlations found in the literature for the other halo clusters, extending them to low radio powers. We found that the total number of electrons injected in the cluster environment by the head–tail source is enough to feed the halo, if we assume that the galaxy has been radio active over a large fraction of its crossing time. We discuss possible origins of the radio halo in the light of the two–phase model (Brunetti et al. 2001) and propose that the observed scenario is the result of a young source at the beginning of the reacceleration phase.

Spectral properties and origin of the radio halo in A 3562
We present a new detailed multiband study of the merging cluster A3562, in the core of the Shapley Concentration Supercluster. We analyzed new, low frequency radio data performed at 240 MHz, 332 MHz and 610 MHz with the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). The new GMRT data allowed us to carry out a detailed study of the radio halo at the centre of A3562, as well as of the head–tail radio ga...
متن کاملDiffuse radio emission in the merging cluster MACS J 0717 . 5 + 3745 : the discovery of the most powerful radio halo
Context. Hierarchical models of structure formation predict that galaxy clusters grow via mergers of smaller clusters and galaxy groups, as well as through continuous accretion of gas. MACS J0717.5+3745 is an X-ray luminous and complex merging cluster, located at a redshift of 0.5548. The cluster is suspected to host a bright radio relic, but up until now no detailed radio observations have bee...
متن کاملA Giant Radio Halo in the Massive and Merging Cluster
We report on the detection of diffuse radio emission in the X-ray luminous and massive galaxy cluster A 1351 (z=0.322) using archival Very Large Array data at 1.4 GHz. Given its central location, morphology and Mpc-scale extent, we classify the diffuse source as a giant radio halo. X-ray and weak lensing studies show A 1351 to be a system undergoing a major merger. The halo is associated to the...
متن کاملA Chandra View of the Multiple Merger In Abell 2744
We present a Chandra observation of the merging cluster of galaxies Abell 2744. The cluster shows strong evidence for an ongoing major merger which we believe to be responsible for the radio halo. X-ray emission and temperature maps of the cluster, combined with the spatial and redshift distribution of the galaxies, indicate a roughly north-south axis for the merger, with a significant velocity...
متن کاملInternal dynamics of the radio halo cluster A 2744
Aims. We present a detailed dynamical analysis of the rich galaxy cluster A2744, containing a powerful diffuse radio halo. Methods. Our analysis is based on redshift data for 102 galaxies, part of them recovered from unexplored spectra in the ESO archive. We combine galaxy velocity and position information to select the cluster members and determine global dynamical properties of the cluster. W...
